If the fossil of the organism is formed deeper layers of earth hen we can predict that the extinction of organism has occurred thousands of years ago as there are thousands upon thousands of layers of soil .The earth contains rocks stacked one on another and the layers of soil contains fossils .The youngest or newest at the top and the oldest at the deepest.

As you move at the bottom you will find the animals who are about to extinct or got extinct and as you come up there are no fossils of modern animals.

Example: As you move towards the surface, you find fish,  amphibians,  reptiles, mammals, birds, and finally modern mammals including humans.
