It order to accommodate five e- pairs the S must use five AOs to form the five MOs (LCAO theory). Always use the low energy s and 3 p AOs (for S these are 3s and three 3p) and then use a (3) d AO to complete hybdirdiazation. Your instructor is therefore probably looking for sp3d. But taking it further: use the d AO that points at the substituents; in this case the z direction (axial sites on trig bipyr), namely, the 3dz^2.

Hybridization is therefore sp3dz^2.
