Let the length = l and breadth = b

Hence, the origanal area = lb

new length = l + (l x 1/2)

                  = 3l/2

new breadth = b + (b x 1/5)

                      = 6b/5

hence, new area = 3l/2 x 6b/5

                            = 18lb/10

hence,  increase in area = 8lb/10

                                        = ((8lb/10)/(10lb/10)) x 100

                                         = 80%

Ans; The area of the rectangle increased by 80%
