Given:

Light from star reaches us in 9.6 light minutes.

To find:

Distance of star from earth ?

Calculation:

1 light-minute (LM) is the distance travelled by light in one minute :

1 \: LM = 3 \times  {10}^{8}  \times 60 = 18 \times  {10}^{9 }  \: metres

Now, total distance of star from earth is :

9.6 \: LM = 9.6 \times (18 \times  {10}^{9} )

 \implies \: 9.6 \: LM = 172.8 \times  {10}^{9}

 \implies \: 9.6 \: LM = 1.73 \times  {10}^{11}  \: metres

 \implies \: 9.6 \: LM = 1.73 \times  {10}^{8}  \: km

So, distance of star from earth is 1.73 × 10 km.

Answer:  1.728 × 10^11 m

Explanation:

1 light minute= speed of light × 1 min

3 × 10^8 m/s × 60s = 1.80 × 10^10

9.6 light minute = 1.80 × 10^10 × 9.6 = 17.28 × 10^10 m

But change it to a single digit, so we shift the sign and change the exponent:

1.728 × 10^11 m, can also be written as 1.728  × 10^8 km
