For a point source, the waveform produced is SPHERICAL.

Detailed discussion:

  • Let's imagine a point source placed at a reference origin.
  • Now, as the waves radiate outwards from the source we can cleary imagine a sphere at a particular radius from the source at which all particles of the wave are in the same phase.
  • So at, particular radii from the sources, as all particles will remain in the same face we will call that sphere as the waveform.
  • So, spherical waveform is produced.

  • Similarly, for linear light sources, we get a cylindrical waveform.
  • For light sources situated at infinity, we get a plane waveform.
