Observations are 8 , 6 , 9 , p + 15 and p + 2.

Mean = 10

Sum of observations/ No of observations = 10

8 + 6 + 9 + p + 15 + p + 2 / 5 = 10

2p + 40 = 50

2p = 10

p = 5.

The value of p = 5

Given :

The mean of 8 , 6 , 9 , p + 15 and p + 2 is 10

To find :

The value of p

Solution :

Step 1 of 3 :

Find sum of the observations

Here the given observations are 8 , 6 , 9 , p + 15 and p + 2

Sum of the observations

= 8 + 6 + 9 + p + 15 + p + 2

= 2p + 40

Step 2 of 3 :

Form the equation

Number of observations = 5

We know that ,

\displaystyle \sf{   \frac{Sum  \: of \:  the  \: observations}{Number \:  of \:  observations} = Mean  }

So by the given condition

\displaystyle \sf{  \frac{2p + 40}{5} = 10  }

Step 3 of 3 :

Find the value of p

\displaystyle \sf{  \frac{2p + 40}{5} = 10 }

\displaystyle \sf{ \implies 2p + 40 = 50}

\displaystyle \sf{ \implies 2p  = 50 - 40}

\displaystyle \sf{ \implies 2p  = 10}

\displaystyle \sf{ \implies p  = 5}

Hence the required value of p = 5
