if the mean of five values is 8.2 and four of the values are 6, 10, 7, and 12, find the fifth value

Solution :

Given values are 6 , 10, 7,

12

Let the fifth value = x

Sum of the values =

6+10+7+12+x

= 35 + x -----( 1 )

Number of values = 5

Now ,

mean = 8.2 ( given )

=> ( 1 )/( 2 ) = 8.2

=> ( 35 + x )/5 = (8.2)

=> 35 + x = 5 × 8.2

=> 35 + x = 41

=> x = 41 - 35

=> x = 6

Therefore ,

Fifth value = 6
