SOLUTION :

The correct option is (c) : x + a

Given : The mean of observation x1, x2, x3 ,......xn is x

Total number of observations = n

MEAN = Sum of all the observations/ Total number of observations

x = (x1+  x2 + x3 + ......+ xn )/n

nx = x1+  x2 + x3 + ......+ xn ……….(1)

New observations are : x1 + a , x2 + a, x3 + a,......xn + a

MEAN = (x1 + a +  x2 + a +  x3 + a +......xn + a) / n

= (x1+  x2 + x3 + ......+ xn) + (a +a + a +....+ an)/n

= (nx + na)/n

[From eq 1]

MEAN = n(x + a)/n = x + a

MEAN = x + a

Hence, the Mean is x + a .
