SOLUTION

GIVEN

The mean of the observations 29, 48, x, 51, x-3 is 39

TO DETERMINE

The value of x

EVALUATION

Here the given observations are 29, 48, x, 51, x-3

Number of observations = 5

Sum of the observations

= 29 + 48 + x + 51 + x - 3

= 2x + 125

So by the given condition

 \displaystyle \sf{ \frac{2x + 125}{5} = 39 }

 \displaystyle \sf{  \implies \: 2x + 125 =195 }

 \displaystyle \sf{  \implies \: 2x =70 }

 \displaystyle \sf{  \implies \: x = 35}

Hence the required value of x = 35
