16,  18,  20, 28, 35, 37, 40 and p.
We don't know what p is.  There are 8 observations.  So the average of 4th and 5th is the median.
If p >= 35,
    then the average of 28 and 35 is the median.  But it is not = 26.
if p <= 20, then
    median will be the average of 20 and 28.  But it is not = 26.
So p is in between 20 and 35.

if   20 <= p <= 28 then,
      median = (p+28)/2 = 26
      => p = 24.

Answer:

Step-by-step explanation:

16,  18,  20, 28, 35, 37, 40 and p.

We don't know what p is.  There are 8 observations.  So the average of 4th and 5th is the median.

If p >= 35,

   then the average of 28 and 35 is the median.  But it is not = 26.

if p <= 20, then

   median will be the average of 20 and 28.  But it is not = 26.

So p is in between 20 and 35.

if   20 <= p <= 28 then,

     median = (p+28)/2 = 26

     => p = 24.
