If the molar volume of a gas at 273 K and 1 atm pressure is less than 22.4 L.

we have to find out the correct option.

 1. Z < 1, repulsive forces are dominant
 2. Z < 1, attractive forces are dominant
 3. Z > 1, repulsive forces are dominant
 4. Z >1 , attractive forces are dominant

we know, compressibility

Z=\frac{V_{real}}{V_{real}}

molar volume, n = 1 , T = 273K, P = 1 atm

V_{ideal}=\frac{nRT}{P}

= \frac{1\times0.082\times273}{1}

= 22.4L

but here

V_{real}<22.4L

so, Z < 1

we also know,

 • Z < 1 then attractive forces . means the real gas occupies less space compared to the ideal gas.
 • Z > 1 then repulsive forces, means the real gas occupies more space compared to the ideal gas.
 • Z = 1 , no forces, it assumes as ideal gas.

hence for Z < 1, the attractive forces are dominant.

Therefore the correct option is (2) is correct.
