the distance travelled by the molecules of ch4 effusing in the same time is 300cm.

    using Graham's law of diffusion,

                     rate of effusion of gas is inversely proportional to square to molecular mass of gas at the same temperature and pressure.

  i.e., rate of effusion of so2 gas/ rate of effusion of ch4 gas = √(M₂/M₁)

here, M₁ = 64 g/mol and M₂ = 16 g/mol

and rate of effusion = volume of gas/time taken = length covered × cross sectional area of pipe/time taken

  as cross sectional and time taken by gases remain same for both cases.

so, length covered by so2/length covered by ch4 = √(16/64) = 1/2

⇒ 150cm/length covered by ch4 gas = 1/2

⇒ length covered by ch4 gas = 2 × 150cm = 300 cm
