If the net force acting on an object is zero, then the body is at rest because no force is acting on it

If the net force acting on an ‘object is zero’, then the body will remain in its previous state of motion. It might be in moving state or in rest state.

The answer of this question lies in Newton’s first law and can be proved mathematically by Newton’s second law.

According to First Law, any body will continue to remain in its “state of rest or motion” until an “external force” is applied on the body.

So according to this rule, if the ‘net force’ acting on an ‘object is zero’, it means that the object will remains in its previous state. This means if the object was moving and the ‘net force’ acting on it is ‘zero’ the object will keep on moving because there is no force to stop it and if the object was in rest when the net force applied on it is zero, then the object will remain in rest because there is no ‘net force’ to overcome its inertial force to make the object move.

Mathematically, it can be proven by ‘Newton’s second law’ as it states that \bold{F=m \times a}.

So if force is zero, either mass of the objet should be zero or the acceleration of the object should be zero. As it is known that mass of an object can’t be zero so in this case, the acceleration will be zero as the net force is zero.

If the acceleration is zero, it means that there is no change in the “rate of speed with respect to time”. So the object will be moving with constant speed which may or may not be zero.
