The, I think it was the Iranians? once used young boys to clear out minefields. They didn't train them in how to disarm mines- they hyped them up on a story of how cool and exciting heaven was going to be- a story specifically tailored to the tastes of kids their age- and sent them running out into the fields until all the mines were exploded.
The story of Valhalla sounds specifically tailored to sound cool to cosmically young and impressionable human warriors dudes.
It's practically implausible. You fight all day for no reason, everyone resurrects in the evening (and where's the energy for that coming from?) and you feast all night- for eternity. Why? How? It's like the gods were offering the Vikings video games if they would explode themselves for the cause.
