Unit Conversions
In this lesson, we will examine how to convert from one system of units to another. For the CAHSEE, you do not need to memorize most of the conversion factors, but you do need to be able to apply the appropriate conversion factor when necessary. There are some conversion factors you will need to remember. Below is a table of some of the conversion factors that you should attempt to memorize. It includes some of the units from the system generally used in the United States and the metric system that is used in the rest of the world and in science.

Metric
1 foot = 12 inches1 kilometer = 1000 meters1 yard = 3 feet1 meter = 1000 millimeters1 hour = 60 minutes1 meter = 100 centimeters1 minute = 60 seconds1 kilogram = 1000 grams1 pound = 16 ounces1 gram = 1000 milligrams 1 kiloliter = 1000 liters 1 liter = 1000 milliliters
Notice that the metric system uses meters for length, grams for weight, and liters for fluid volume. If you remember the three prefixes: kilo-, centi-, and milli-, then you can handle most of the questions that the CAHSEE will ask you that involve the metric system conversion.
