You must first know the difference between the valency and valence electrons.
Valency:-
Valency is defined as the number of electrons required by an atom to attained stable electronic configuration.
Valence electrons:-
Valence electrons is defined as the electrons present in the outermost she'll of the atom.
Now if the valence electrons is given, you must know the capacity of the she'll in which the valence electrons present.
Then subtract the remaining elections required in the shell and it is the valency of the atom.
