let the required number be ' x '

first case : when the numerator and denominator of the fraction 3/ 4

increased by x

then the fraction formed
___________________
=( 3 + x ) / ( 4 + x )

second case : when the numerator and denominator of the fraction 5 / 6 is decreased by x

then,the fraction formed
___________________
=( 5 - x )/ ( 6 - x )

according to question , first case and second case are same . so now

( 3 + x ) / ( 4 + x ) = ( 5 - x ) / ( 6 - x )

( 6 - x ) ( 3 + x ) = ( 4 + x ) ( 5 - x )

18 + 6 x - 3 x - x^2 = 20 - 4 x + 5x - x^2

18 + 3 x = 20 + x - x^2 + x^2

18 + 3 x = 20 + x

3 x - x = 20 - 18

2 x = 2

x = 1

therefore , required number = 1
