x + 2y = 3 \\ 2x + 4y = k

multiply \: equation \: 1 \: by \: 2

2x + 4y = 6 \\ 2x + 4y = k

change \: sign \: of \: equation \: 2

2x + 4y = 6 \\  - 2x - 4y =  - k

 0 = 6 - k

k = 6

add \: both
