If the percentage of water of crystallization in MgSO4.x H2O is 13%, what is the value of x?

Answer:

Mass of MgSO₄ = 24 + 32 + 64 = 120 g

Hence mass of MgSO₄.x H₂O = 120 + 18x

⇒ Now, it is given that 13% is water….

13 % = ( mass of water ) / ( mass of total compound )

⇒  13/100 = (18x)/(18x + 120)

⇒ 1800x = 13(18x + 120)

⇒ 1800x = 234x + 1560

⇒ 1566x = 1560

x ≈ 1

Hence The compound is MgSO₄ . H₂O
