Given :  The perpendicular distance of a point P from the x-axis is 7 units and the foot of the perpendicular lies on the negative direction of x-axis, then the point P has:

To Find : the point P has

a) y-coordinate = 7 or –7 only

b) y-coordinate = 7 only

c) y-coordinate = –7 only

d) x-coordinate = –7

Solution:

The perpendicular distance of a point P from the x-axis is 7 units

A line  y = k  has a distance of  | k |  from x axis

Distance is 7 units

Hence | k | = 7

=> k = ± 7

Hence y = ± 7

Point P  = ( x , ± 7)

Hence y-coordinate = 7 or –7 only

Additional Info :

Perpendicular lies on the negative direction of x-axis Hence x coordinate of point P must be negative

point P has y-coordinate = 7 or –7 only

Answer:

The perpendicular distance of a point P from

the x-axis is 7 units

A line y = k has a distance of Ikl from x

axis

Distance is 7 units

Hence |k| = 7

=> k = ± 7

Hence y = plus/minus 7

Point P = (x, plus/minus 7)

Hence y-coordinate = 7 or -7 only.
