Materialistic wealth doesn't always necessarily bring happiness. It is the feeling of purpose that gives life the real meaning. Being a king, if he hasn't brought justice to his people or haven't made any significant difference in their lives, he is incomplete from within. It is the sense of this nothingness that makes him sad.
