x + y - 2 = 0 . . . . . (1)

4x + 4y - 3 = 0 . . . . . (2)

The locus of (a, a^2) intersects (1) and (2) at (1/2, 1/4) and (1, -1) with the range a=[1/2 to 1] and

at (-3/2, 9/4) and (-2, 4) with the range a = [ -2 to -3/2)].

In magnitude the total range of a = 1/2 + 1/2 = 1
