answer : option (d) value of y = 1

given, point P(6, 2) divided the line segment joining the points A(6, 5) and B(4, y) in the ratio of 3 : 1.

using section formula,

x = (mx₂ + nx₁)/(m + n) and y = (my₂ + ny₁)/(m + n)

here, y = 2, y₂ = y, y₁ = 5 and m : n = 3 : 1

so, 2 = (3 × y + 1 × 5)/(3 + 1)

⇒2 × 4 = 3y + 5

⇒8 = 3y + 5

⇒y = 1

hence value of y = 1
