Let the present age of son be x yrs.

So the present age of father = 5x yrs.

After 17 yrs...

The age of son will be = x+17 yrs.

The age of father will be = 5x +17 yrs.

According to the problem
---------------------------------------
 \frac{5x + 17}{x + 17} = 3 \\ or. \: 5x + 17 = 3x + 51 \\ or. \: 2x = 34 \\ or. \: x = 17
So the present age of son is 17 yrs.

The present age of father = 5×17 =85 yrs.
