Given : ratio of the sides of each small rectangle in the image is 2:5

To Find :  the ratio of the yellow portion to the red portion? a. 1:3 b. 1:4 C. 2:3

Solution:

Let say 2x is the height of small rectangle  and 5x is the width

Hence 2x + 2x = 4x  is on leg of triangle

and 5x is another leg

so area of triangle = (1/2)4x * 5x = 10x²

as line dividing triangle is parallel

so yellow triangle is similar to larger triangle

with ratio of sides  = (2x/4x) = 1/2

Area of yellow triangle = (1/2)²  10x²  = 2.5 x²

Area of red triangle = 10x²  - 2.5 x²  = 7.5 x²

ratio of the yellow portion to the red portion

= 2.5 x² :  7.5 x²

=  1 : 3
