if the roots of the equations x^-px+q=0 differ by unity prove that p^=4q+1

The question tells us that the roots have a difference of 1, so if one root is (alpha), then the other one must be either (alpha+1), or (alpha-1). I have calculated using (alpha+1), but the answer must be the same for any of the two cases.
