because water contain ions

Explanation:

Roots take up water by the process of osmosis. The negative potential of water in the root cells helps in the constant absorbance of water.

Due to this movement of water, the pressure inside the roots become high which exerts a force in the upward direction. Thus, the water enters the xylem in the root.

Therefore, the roots take up ions and results in the absorbance of water.
