then, selling price of each book is (x + y)

now, 16 SP = 17CP

⇒16(x + y) = 17x

⇒16y = x

⇒y = x/16 ........(1)

percentage gain (profit) = profit/cost price × 100

= y/x × 100

= (x/16)/x × 100 [ from eq (1) ]

= 100/16

= 6.25 %
