a = \frac{x-5y}{3}

Step-by-step explanation:

a + 4d = x + y                ----------------(1)

a + d = x - y                   ----------------(2)

subtracting equation 2 from 1

we get,

           =   3d = 2y

           =   d = \frac{2y}{3}

from equation (1)

a = x - y - 2y/3

a+  x-5y/3
