refractive index of a medium is the ratio of speed of light in vaccum to speed of light of light in that medium.
i.e., refractive index of a medium= speed of light in vaccum/speed of light in medium.
here, speed of light in water = 2.25 × 10^8 m/s
and speed of light in vaccum = 3 × 10^8 m/s
so, refractive index of water = 3 × 10^8/2.25 × 10^8
= 3/2.25 = 3/(9/4)
= 4/3
hence, refractive index of water is 4/3
