Spring constant k is the amount of force you need to create a compression / extension of unit length(may be 1 mm or 1 cm or 1 m depending on the system of units you follow)
A stiff spring means larger force is needed to bring unit deflection in it. Which means
When k=F/x ……k - spring constant, F - force needed,x - deflection
A higher value of k means that F required will be higher. Hence a stiff spring.
In case of a soft spring, less force is needed to bring the same unit deflection.
