If the successive ionization enthalpies of a metal (M)
are x, 3x, 30x kJ mol-7 respectively then the formula
of metal halide will be
(1) NX
(3) MX
(4) MX,

Answer: 4)MX2

Explanation:

The change in enthalpy are

Δ(E2-E1) < Δ(E3-E2)

∴ It's not easy to pluck out the 3rd e- with minimal energy. So it attains noble gas configuration after removing 2e-.

Thus the formula should have been MCl2 as it can share 2e- with chlorine.
