let the two numbers be x and y respectively...

by question,

x+y=40.... i

x-y= 8.......ii

so, On adding both the equation...

we get,

2x= 48

or, x= 24

so, y= 40-24

= 16

hence, the smaller number is 16

Answer:

Step-by-step explanation: Let the two numbers be x and y, then

Sum of two numbers , i.e. x+y = 40 and difference of two numbers, i.e. x-y = 8 Let the equations be 1 and 2 By adding the equations 1 and 2 x+y =40 x-y =8 2x = 48 x = 24 Now substitute "x" in equation 1 24 + y = 40 y = 40-24 y =16 *The smaller number is 16
