let a be the first term,and let d be the common difference,

a7 = 49 , a17 =289

a + 6d=49, a + 16d=289

so

a + 6d=49

a + 16d=289

---------------------

-10d= -240

d=24

-------------------

and a= -95

hence the first no is -95 and the common difference is 24
