Given :-

  • The sum of two consecutive numbers is 79.

To find :-

  • Largest number

Solution :-

Let the consecutive numbers be x and (x + 1)

  • Sum of two consecutive numbers = 79

According to the given condition

→ x + (x + 1) = 79

→ x + x + 1 = 79

→ 2x + 1 = 79

→ 2x = 79 - 1

→ 2x = 78

→ x = 78/2

→ x = 39

Hence,

  • x = 39

Therefore,

  • Largest number = (x + 1) = 40

Verification :-

  • Sum of two consecutive numbers = 79

→ x + (x + 1) = 79

→ 39 + 40 = 79

→ 79 = 79

  • Hence verified

Answer:

  • Let the smaller number be x.

  • The next larger number be x + 1

According to Question now :

x + x + 1 = 79

2x + 1 = 79

2x = 79 - 1

x = 78/2

x = 39

Therefore,

  • The smaller number = x = 39

  • The largest number = x + 1 = 39 + 1 = 40

To check, subsitute x by 39

x + x + 1 = 79

39 + 39 + 1 = 79

79 = 79 equal. value of x is correct
