So, x = 11 - y ..........(1)

Also,

x - y = 5

11 - y - y = 5 {from equation 1}

- 2y = 5 - 11

- 2y = -6

y = 3

Putting this on equation (1)

x = 11 - 3

x = 8

so the numbers are 8 and 3.
