If the sum of two numbers is 12 and the sum of their squares is 74, find the product of the numbers.

ATQ

(x+y)^2 = x^2 + 2xy + y^2

12^2 = 74 + 2xy

144 = 74 + 2xy

70 = 2xy

xy = 35.

NOW (x+y)^2- 4xy = (x-y)^2

so 144 - 140 = 4

so x-y = 2 [eq. 2]

solving 1 &2

x+y + x -y = 2+ 12

2x = 14

x = 7

and y = 5
