●Symbol is a short hand representation of an element.●Generally first letter of every element will be it's symbol.●For few elements first two alphabets is written. First letter capital and second letter small letter.●Cobalt is an element so it's symbol is Co.

If Cobalt (Co) was written as CO it would be classed as Carbon and Oxygen, which would be wrong.
