The Titanic sent  CQD and SOS messages, and the other ships received them. They sent these messages to North American ports  before anyone  got there to  rescue or start rescue. It was big news that a famous ship like the Titanic got into trouble. The updates then continued to flow toward the coast until the survivors arrived in New York on their own and were able to tell their stories.
