Squaring both sides;
=) (x +1/x)^2 = 3^2
=) x^2 + 1/x^2 + 2*x * 1/x = 9
=) x^2 + 1/x^2 + 2 = 9
=) x^2 + 1/x^2 = 9-2 = 7
