solution: We know that the energy is inversely proportional to the square of the width of the potential surface. We can write it as

E = n^2h^2/ 8mL^2

keeping everything constant except the width that is L

we can write it as E = k/L^2

Lnew is width after the increment that is

Lnew = 3L

We can write new energy of infinite potential box as

Enew/E = L^2/Lnew^2 = L^2/ (3L)^2 = 1/9

So, Enew = E/9

Therefore, the energy of particle will decrease by a factor of 9.
