The total energy of a satellite is negative and not the kinetic energy, because if the total energy is positive or zero, the satellite will escape to infinity. For a finite distance, potential energy of a satellite is negative but double of kinetic energy, whereas, kinetic energy is positive and their total sum is, negative.
