Given :

Total number of apples = 20

Total number of people = 20

Number of apples eaten by each man = 4

Number of apples eaten by each women = \dfrac{1}{2}

Number of apples eaten by each child = \dfrac{1}{4}

To find : Number of men =? women = ? child = ?

Solution :

Let the number of men be 'x'

Let the number of women be 'y'

Let the number of child be 'z'.

According to question, it becomes :

x+y+z=20\\\\4x=\dfrac{1}{2}\times y=\dfrac{1}{4}\times z=k\\\\ x=\dfrac{k}{4}\\\\y=2k\\\\z=4k

So, it becomes :

x+y+z=20\\\\\dfrac{k}{4}+2k+4k=20\\\\\dfrac{k}{4}+6k=20\\\\\dfrac{k+24k}{4}=20\\\\\dfrac{25k}{4}=20\\\\k=\dfrac{80}{25}=3.2

So,

\dfrac{k}{4}=\dfrac{3.2}{4}=0.8\approx 1\\\\2k=2\times 3.2=6.4=6\\\\ 4k=4\times 3.2=12.8=13

Hence, there are 1 men, 5 women and 13 children.
