According to IUCN red list, the population of lions in African Savannah is around 23,000–39,000. Compare that to the thriving population of 100,000 just 50 years ago and you get an idea of how rapidly these beasts are losing ground. At this rate the lion population is likely to half in the next two decades.

The Asiatic lion that once roamed from Greece to India is now isolated to an area of mere 1412 square km in the Gir forest of India. The population of these lions is about 650 individuals according to a survey in 2017 . The number of Asiatic lions is actually going up but sadly the Gir forest has reached its carrying capacity and the lions are now spilling out which carries a threat of conflict with humans. To make the matters worse, the Gujarat government is reluctant to obey the Indian supreme court’s orders to reintroduce the lions into the neighboring state of Madhya pradesh putting the lions in gir forest at a risk of epidemic, natural disaster and inbreeding.

More than 1,000 African lions and more than 100 Asiatic lions live in captivity.

Tl;DR

About 23,000–39,000 African lions and around 650 Asiatic lions.
