If there is deficiency of iodine in the body,
the thyroid gland is not able to produce
thyroxine. When the gland when tries to
produce the hormone, it swells up and the
condition is called Goitre. This disease
become endemic among the people living
at high altitudes because they do not
have sufficient iodine in their water.
lodized salt is recommended to overcome
the deficiency of iodine and avoid goitre.​
