If there is sufficient fossil fuel how will we cope?

Answer:
It is becoming more and more possible every week to head toward 100% combustion free energy.
That means no coal, no oil, no biomass. Just wind, solar, hydroelectric, and nuclear. The two last hold outs for petroleum use are industrial heat and transportation. The continuing implementation of renewable energy is going to require an immense amount of energy storage, and the two giant uses for that will be vehicle batteries and thermal storage to produce heat for industries that are currently burning oil and natural gas.
The one thing we will never need to fear again is energy inadequacy. I would shift your worries toward fresh water inadequacy.
I would go on about that but nobody seems to care because using less water means making less net profit in agriculture, so nobody seems to be willing to invest heavily in water conservation.
