In figure 1 :

As per Newton's Law of Gravitation:

F =  \dfrac{G(m1)(m2)}{ {d}^{2} }  = x

In figure 2 :

  • The distance became 2d :

F_{2}=  \dfrac{G(m1)(m2)}{ {(2d)}^{2} }

 \implies F_{2}=  \dfrac{G(m1)(m2)}{4 {d}^{2}  }

 \implies F_{2}= \dfrac{1}{4}   \times  \dfrac{G(m1)(m2)}{{d}^{2}  }

 \implies F_{2}= \dfrac{1}{4}   \times  F

 \implies F_{2}= \dfrac{1}{4}   \times  x

 \implies F_{2}= \dfrac{x}{4}

So, F (in fig 2) = x/4.
