If this had been M. Hamel’s first lesson, then it would not have impacted the students so much. There are many reasons behind it.
1. M. Hamel would be just a stranger for them. They would not have become attached to him. Students had become attached to him after his forty years long association. At the time of first lecture, this association wouldn’t have been there.
2. M. Hamel’s last lesson was associated with the loss of French language and freedom, that’s why it had more impact on the students. However, at the time of his first lesson, it would not be so.
