When three equal resistances are connected in a parallel and the equivalent resistance is 1 ohm, what will be the equivalent resistance when they connect in a series?
So you have 3 equal resistors in parallel. To find the total we have to use this formula:
1/R1+1/R2+1/R3+…+1/Rn=1/R(total)
You have 3 equal ones and know the total (equivalent) resistance. That means: 1/R+1/R+1/R=1/(1Ω)
You can now solve for R:
3/R=1/(1Ω)
R/3=1Ω
R=3Ω
For resistors in series you just have to add them up to get equivalent resistance: R(total)=R1+R2+R3+…+Rn
Now just sum up: 3Ω+3Ω+3Ω=9Ω So the equivalent resistance when they are connected in series is 9Ω.
