Let the numbers be

x+1 , x+3 , x+5 , x+7

x+1+x+3+x+5+x+7 = 40

4x + 16 = 40

4(x+4) = 40

x+4 = 10

x = 10-4

x = 6

x+1 = 6+1 = 7

x + 3 = 6+3 = 9

x+5 = 6+5 = 11

x+7 = 6+7 = 13

according to the question,
x+1+x+3+x+5+x+7=40
4x+16=40. ( here send +16 to R.H.S )
4x=40-16
4x=24. ( here send ×4 from L.H.S to R.H.S )
x=24/4
x=7
